Heard words paper installation by UK’s BAT studio creates a modern day scribes’ office. Situated in an un-used shop, the installation interacts with visitors as they speak ― transcribing their words using a series of machines located around the room. The various devices detect conversation, immediately printing out the verbal exchange onto streams of paper. [via designboom.com]

Susie MacMurray

Susie MacMurray is a British artist whose work includes drawing, sculpture and architectural installations. A former classical musician, she retrained as an artist, graduating with an MA in Fine Art in 2001. She lives in Manchester and has an international exhibition profile, showing regularly in the USA and Europe as well as the UK.

An engagement with materials and with the body is at the heart of MacMurray’s practice. Her role is one of an alchemist: combining material, form and context in deceptively simple ways to stimulate both physical and cultural associations within those who encounter her work.

Working in installation and sculpture she has gained a reputation for poetic site-specific interventions in historic spaces. Her work typically references the history of a space and merges the particularities of that history, the specifics of the site, and the meanings of materials to gain insight and raise questions about the relationship between place and people.

Drawing is an important part of MacMurray’s practice. In addition to her large scale pen & ink work she extends the possibilities of making drawings using unconventional materials including rubber tubing, hair and wax. She also makes pen & ink drawings on a more intimate scale and produces sculptural wall pieces and other work for private commissions.

In September 2011, Colorado-based artist Heather Sitarzewski began making daily pop culture bento box lunches for her son, theming the meals around characters from video games, cartoons, movies and more. Hosted on the blog Lunchbox Awesome, she said she enjoys making bento boxes because she gets to start off her days tapping into her creative side. Though the blog went on hiatus in 2012, Sitarzewski has brought it back this year. Hat tip to Laughing Squid.

Wolfgang Stiller - Matchstick Men

Perhaps providing social commentary on the way in which everyday life tends to burn people out over time, German artist Wolfgang Stiller has created “Matchstick Men.” Appearing on their own and in matchbox-like “coffins,” the collection was created in Stiller’s studio by combining various head molds and bamboo wood scraps that were left over from a film production in Beijing. The charred remains of the “Matchstick Men” will be on display as a part of Stiller’s “Burnout” exhibition at Zurich’s Python Gallery beginning this Friday, March 8, and will remain available for viewing through April 20.

Rainbow In Your Hand - Masashi Kawamura

This book started as a personal project in summer 2007, and was soon published from a Japanese bookstore “Utrecht”. It’s a flipbook, but rather than seeing animation, it creates a 3D rainbow in your hand. Since being published it has been featured on Japanese TV, Newspapers, major news & blogsites like yahoo news, coolhunting and found. This book won this years NY ADC silver cube.

German artist Thomas Grünfeld has created a wide variety of artworks in different medium over his career. On of his stand out series is ‘Misfits’ a collection of hybrid taxidermy animals. You could describe these pieces as animals collages as they meld two different animals together, one being the body and one the head. The creations are real but they appear to be the sort of creatures dreamed up by children.
